Section
06-054 Student Suspensions,
Expulsions
For
serious cause, such as gross misconduct or persistent disobedience, the
Principal has the authority to suspend a pupil when such action is in the best
interests of the other pupils. The
Principal shall have the authority to suspend a pupil for a maximum of five (5)
days, and may recommend longer suspensions to the Superintendent, who has the
authority to suspend pupils for a period not to exceed 90 school days.
Expulsions shall be made only by the Board of Education, upon
recommendation of the Superintendent, and shall be for a period not to exceed
186 school days. All suspensions are
to be reported to the parents of the pupil, if possible, by means of a form to
be mailed to the parent setting forth such information as the length of
suspension, cause of suspension, and terms under which the suspension may be
lifted. A copy of this report shall
be filed with the Superintendent. Suspended
pupils shall not be restored to the privileges of the schools except on
recommendation by the Principal and approval by the Superintendent, and for
expelled pupils Board approval shall also be required.
In all cases of student suspension or expulsion, the procedures as set
forth in KSA 72-8901 et. seq. shall be followed.
The Principals shall have the authority to use probation as a form of
discipline in individual situations where the use of probation is deemed to be
appropriate.
