09-002 Eligible Riders
All students, living at their legal residence of 2.5 miles or more from their respective attendance centers, will be provided transportation as required by state statute. This may mean in certain circumstances that some students may live within the city limits and still be 2.5 miles or more from an attendance center.
1. Eligible Riders will be allowed to be picked up from or delivered to a permanent secondary site that is on their established route. Written permission from parents must be on file with the Transportation Director before this is allowed.
It shall be the objective of the Board to provide sufficient buses to transport all students residing outside the city limits to and from school. It is recognized, however, that the Board has no obligation to provide such transportation for students living less than 2.5 miles from school.
In cases where buses become overloaded and resources are not available to meet the demand, the following corrective action shall be taken on an individual route basis:
Students living less than 2.5 miles from their respective attendance center shall then be denied riding privileges by the following plan of action:
Starting with the highest grade level and on a descending complete grade level basis, students will be removed until the overload is corrected.
The Board of Education does allow all students to be eligible to ride buses for shuttle purposes between schools on a daily space available basis only.
Bus riding privileges on an individual basis for non-regular route riders to homes of regular-route riders will not be allowed due to the space considerations.
Emergency riding privileges for all students may be utilized for a short period of time to make sure that students reach another destination as required by the crisis. The superintendent of schools shall have the authority to make the decision but generally the length of time should not exceed five days. It is understood that should the bus be completely filled with eligible riders, this provision cannot be honored due to requirements of law.
