Section 10-043  Senior Early Release For College Attendance

1.                  All seniors must attend at least 6 class periods during the first semester of their senior year.  (This would equate to their 7th complete semester of attendance in high school.)  Students may be released from attending during the 7th class period to attend an approved college class.

2.                  During the second semester of the senior year (the 8th semester of attendance) a student may be released from school with less than a full day of attendance under the following conditions.

a.                   The parent or guardian of the student must request in writing approval to attend less than 6 class periods.

b.                  The student must attend at least 2 class periods in high school and enroll in the required English and Kansas History/American Government classes.

c.                   Student attendance in high school must be in consecutive class periods.

d.                  Students must enroll in one dual-credit college class for each class period of release from high school classes minus the one travel class.  (Example:  If a student attends 2 periods per day in high school they must enroll in four 3 hour college classes for dual credit.)  This policy may be amended by the high school principal in cases where the schedule would cause an overload.  Students wishing a waiver should make the request in writing to the high school principal and should state the reasons for the request.

e.                   Students who drop a college class will have that class listed on their high school transcript with a recorded grade of F.  This qualification is subject to appeal to the high school principal and the F grade could be changed to WD if approved by the high school principal.

f.                    The student must present proof of payment of college fees prior to the second day of the beginning of the high school second semester or the student will be required to drop the college classes and enroll full time in high school.

g.                   It will be the responsibility of the high school student to present an official copy of the grade report for college classes to the high school registrar.  If this copy is not presented within 30 days of the completion of the class the grade will revert to an F on the high school transcript.  This qualification is subject to appeal to the high school principal and the F grade could be changed to WD if approved by the high school principal.

h.                   All classes which are required for graduation from Mulvane High School must be taken in residence at MHS as high school classes.  The high school principal may approve a dual-credit class to make up for a required class that has been failed in high school.

i.                     Students who plan to participate in extra-curricular activities must meet the eligibility requirements of the State High School Activities Association and local Board of Education requirements.  The student is responsible to provide all grade information necessary from their dual-credit classes to determine eligibility.  Students will meet the same timeline requirement as all other students.

j.                    The student is responsible for getting any necessary information from our high school regarding graduation practice time, ordering announcements, cap and gown orders, etc.

k.                  All obligations to Mulvane High School must be fulfilled subsequent to graduation.

l.                     Any of the above requirements are subject to review by the high school principal and can be waived if circumstances justify change.

                                                                                                Approved by Board 7-11-94 .
