TECHNOLOGY-Computer Concepts I

Course Description
Computer Concepts I is an advanced level class that builds on the skills learned in  Word Processing.  Document formatting will include letters with special features, memorandums, tables, agendas, forms, reports, purchase invoices and orders.  Basic spreadsheet applications will be introduced. 

Pre-requisite—Offered to grades 11 and 12.  Student must have attained a passing grade in Word Processing.

Course length—95 hours—one class period per day for one semester.  One-half credit.

  Course Outcomes:

1.         The student will learn how to format text to enhance the appearance of a word processing                          document.

2.                  Students will work with special word processing tools such as cut and paste and search and replace.

3.                  Students will learn how to create and format special business documents in mailable and reproducible form.

4.                  Students will continue to advance skills in database applications concentrating on merging and sorting data.

5.                  Students will work with graphic layout and design to produce newsletters, brochures, posters, etc.

6.                  Students will work with simple spreadsheets performing calculations using formulas and functions.

Course Content:

I.                    ENHANCING CORRESPONDENCE FORMATTING SKILLS

A.                 Review letters, memos and 3-mail

B.                 Create letters from form paragraphs

C.                 Format two-page letters

D.                 Prepare letters with special parts

E.                  Create data source file and mail merge

F.                  Use mail merge function to produce letters, envelopes, name tags, etc.

G.                 Prepare personalized form letters with fill in fields.

II.                 IMPROVING TABLE FORMATTING SKILLS

A.                 Format tables with tab stops and indentations

B.                 Format tables with column widths set automatically

C.                 Format tables with equal columns

D.                 Process tables with pre-designed formats

E.                  Format itineraries

F.                  Format agendas

G.                 Apply shading and borders to tables

III.               CREATING EMPLOYMENT DOCUMENTS

A.                 Create electronic and print resumes

B.                 Create and revise employment application letters

C.                 Prepare application forms and follow-up letters

IV.              FORMATTING COLUMN DOCUMENTS

A.                 Create one-column flyers

B.                 Prepare newspaper style columns
