TECHNOLOGY-Word Processing

Course Description
Word Processing is an advanced course.  Skills will be developed using word processing and publishing software.  Document formatting will include letters, memorandums, tables, agendas, forms, reports, purchase orders and invoices, and many other documents used in business today.  Students will be required to research a topic of teacher’s choice using the Internet to produce a research paper in correct format.  After basic instruction, students will perform a wide variety of tasks using their knowledge and skills in simulations.

Enrollment for this course is targeted to students in grades 10-12.

Course Length
95 hours – (one lass per day for one semester)

  Course Outcomes

1.                  The student will be able to produce letters from script, rough draft, and straight copy in acceptable formats containing special notations.

2.                  The student will be able to use mail-merge features to create form letters and labels.

3.                  The student will create envelopes using USPS format using computer software.

4.                  The student will be able to produce reports including title and reference pages using textual citations, footnotes, and endnotes.

5.                  The student will be able to format tables using word processing software.

6.                  The student will be able to use the 10-key keypad on the computer keyboard to enter date in the computer.

7.                  The student will be able to demonstrate ethical conduct related to the use of the computer, internet and e-mail.

8.                  The student will be able to format and produce brochures and newsletters using publisher software.

9.                  The student will be able to produce an original project using publisher software.

I.                    INTRODUCTION TO THE PC AND THE NETWORK

A.                 Setup and connection of the computer

B.                 Creating directories/file management

II.                 LETTER/MEMO FORMATTING SKILLS

A.                 Format letters in block and modified block with several variations such as

mixed and open punctuation.

B.                 Format special features in letters including mailing notations, subject line, copy and enclosure notations.

C.                 Use mail-merge to create form letters, envelopes and labels.

D.                 Prepare memorandums in formal and simplified formats.

III.               REPORTS

A.                 Prepare reports in unbound, leftbound, topbound, and MLA format

B.                 Incorporate textual citations, footnotes, and endnotes into reports.

C.                 Insert tables, graphs, and graphics into reports.

D.                 Research and write a report in MLA format.

IV.              TABLES

A.                 Create tables using tab stops (left, right, dot leader, decimal)

B.                 Use table features in the word processor to create a table

C.                 Incorporate secondary and column headings into a table.

D.                 Center (vertically and horizontally) tables on various sizes of paper.

V.                 BROCHURES, NEWSLETTERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS

A.                 Create brochures using publisher software
