All Staff Health Screening February 8 e-mail forwarded to Group All on 1/6/12 from Tom Keil
Our district will hold a health screening on Wednesday, February 8th from 6:30am to 7:45 am in the health room at Mulvane High School. I hope that you will consider participating. No charge for employees covered under the districts health insurance. They charge $60.00 for females and $70.00 for males not covered under the districts health insurance. The results are returned quickly and only you will see the results of the tests. Additional information and instructions will be emailed and posted in your building. Thanks, Tom
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a health screening?
A health screening is one way to assess your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. It does not replace your annual physical exam.
You will be asked to schedule an appointment prior to the event date. Information will be given you on how you can schedule your appointment. Upon your arrival the morning of the event, you will be given a health risk questionnaire to complete. You will then be directed to health professional staff who will measure your height, weight, blood pressure and body composition (BMI and Body Fat %). Body composition is measured by use of a hand-held device using height, weight, age and gender information.
A health professional from AMS Labs, a Via Christi entity, will then perform a blood draw to obtain a blood specimen. This specimen will be used to measure your total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and your HbA1c (measures your 90-day blood glucose average).
How much time do I need to plan for?
Each screening takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, including the completion of paperwork.
Is there a cost to participate in the health screening?
There is no out-of-pocket cost to those individuals who are covered under a Preferred Health Systems health plan. Cost is $60.00 for females and $70.00 for males not covered under the district health insurance.
Do I need to fast before the health screening?
We recommend fasting for 8 - 10 hours prior to the health screening. LDL cholesterol and triglycerides results are impacted by recent food intake; therefore, these tests are most accurate after having fasted. It is important that you drink plenty of water prior to and the morning of your appointment.
Am I allowed to drink coffee while fasting?
We ask that you refrain from eating or drinking anything other than water prior to your appointment in order to obtain the most accurate measures possible.
What happens to my information?
The answers you give on your health risk questionnaire are combined with your biometric measurements (height, weight, blood pressure, body composition) and your lab results and are populated into a personalized, bound report that you will receive within two weeks following your appointment.
We encourage each participant to share their results with their personal health care provider.
All personal information is kept private and confidential. Your personal results will not be shared with your employer and have no effect on your health insurance.

Walk Kansas Instructions and Daily Log - email forwarded to Group All on 3/31/11 from Tom Keil
How Walk Kansas Works
From Sunday, April 3th – Friday May 20th each participant will log minutes of moderate and/or vigorous activity each day. On Monday of each week, participants will report total minutes on the spreadsheet in the faculty lounge or designated area. Amy will compile the totals and convert your minutes to “walking miles” each week. 15 minutes of activity = 1 walking mile. Attached is a log for tracking your daily progress.
How much, what kind of activity? (From Physical Guideline for Americans)
There are two categories of activity and both are important. Aerobic and strengthening activity recommendations are identified through Physical Guidelines for Americans. (If you are participating in Walk Kansas, you will count activity minutes that meet these guidelines.)
Aerobic and Strengthening Activities
Physical movement that is very beneficial to your health includes both aerobic and strengthening activities. Aerobic activities speed your heart rate and breathing as they help improve heart and lung fitness. Strengthening activities help build and maintain bones and muscles. As we age, we naturally lose muscle strength unless we make a conscious effort to slow down this process.
Walking is a type of aerobic activity that most people can do, however, there are other options. Physical activity guidelines recommend 2 hours and 30 minutes a week (minimum) of moderate activities, such as biking, canoeing, tennis (doubles), walking briskly, water aerobics, ballroom or line dancing, using your manual wheelchair, some gardening (mowing with push mower, raking), and sports where you catch and throw (volleyball, softball, etc.) Do the Talk Test: During moderate activity, you should be able to talk, but not sing.
If possible, you should also include some vigorous activity. A good test for vigorous activity is if you can only say a few words without stopping to catch your breath. If you are not active now, start with a moderate level and include vigorous activities when you are able. These include jogging, jumping rope, biking faster than 10 miles per hour, aerobic, dance, tennis (singles), hiking uphill, fast dancing, and sports with a lot of running (basketball, soccer, etc.)
Strengthen Your Muscles
In addition to aerobic activity, the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans also recommend that you do muscle strengthening exercises at least 2 days each week. Try to include all major muscle groups such as legs, hips, back, chest, stomach, shoulders, and arms.
When reporting for Walk Kansas, include minutes of aerobic (moderate and vigorous) and strengthening activities that you perform for a minimum of 10 minutes at a time.

MULVANE USD 263 Walk Kansas
“Building Challenge”
A 3 for 1 challenge - Walk across - Walk around - Walk beyond Kansas
Monday, April 4th – Friday, May 20th
7 Weeks
Our next challenge will resemble the Walk Kansas challenge. This challenge will improve your personal fitness with the support from your co-workers. You and your building will “walk” your way across, around and beyond Kansas.
The challenge is simple. All you need is your co-workers and a desire to get moving. Dust off your exercise shoes and prepare to join us for a 7-week walk program.
Challenge 1: Walk across Kansas. Which building can make it across Kansas first? (423 miles)
Challenge 2: Continue walking and be the first building that can make is around Kansas first? (1200 miles)
Challenge 3: Walk beyond Kansas and log the most miles during the 7-week challenge.
The more people you have involved the faster you will cross Kansas and the farther you will go.
What Activities Count as Walk Kansas Minute? The activity must be at least 15 consecutive minutes (not 3 minutes walking from the parking lot, another 2 minutes walking up the stairs, etc.) Activities must also be moderate and/or vigorous, or they can be strengthening activities.
How will we track Walk Kansas miles and how will I know my building’s progress compared to other buildings? You will report your miles each week to Amy. The results will be posted each Monday on the District website, HR, Latest News section.
Register with Amy at amundell@usd263.com
Additional Information and Instructions will be provided.

Frequently Asked Questions - 10,000 Step Challenge - email sent 9/3/10 from Tom Keil to Group All
Hello Steppers,
We have nearly 200 people participating in the 10,000 step challenge? I’m hearing some incredibly high daily step counts, which is great news. That really has helped keep me motivated. It must be the “Golden Shoe” award everyone is afterJ We also have 9 teams that have entered the team competition division.
I wanted to clarify for everyone a few questions that have come in the last few days.
Are we tracking 5 days or 7 days?
Sorry, this has been changed; we will count steps 7 days per week since the Sedgwick County Health Department has is set up that way. Complete the daily tracking form that was emailed to you and remember to submit your weekly results on-line. Let me know if you need the link sent again.
Does my pedometer track mileage?
Yes, you can press the “mode” button and adjust the setting.
