Bailing Wire or Duct Tape

School District Finds Cost Saving Solution

What some people see as junk, the USD 263 maintenance and grounds department see as an opportunity to make cash to help pay for tools and equipment for their department.

Several years ago the department consisted of one director and six full time employees.    Today the department has been reduced to one supervisor and three full time employees.  However, if you take a drive around the campuses you would never realize it.  They take great pride in their work which is a reflection of our school district and the Mulvane community.

What you don’t see behind the scenes is supervisor Larry Wolfe and his team recycling anything they can to earn a buck.  From old fence posts, metal pipes, door frames, copper wire, scrap metals, old vacuums, car parts and even selling sod from Lyle Couch Field.

They have earned enough money to purchase snow blowers, chainsaws, drills and other equipment for the department.  This has literally saved this district thousands of dollars.

With less staff and fewer funds the department has been committed to helping the district minimize the financial burden.  Many can relate to solving problems using bailing wire and duct tape during difficult times.

We appreciate the positive attitude and efficiency of this department.
