CURRICULUM

Mulvane is on a scheduled cycle for reviewing the district curriculum. This means that a team of K-12 teachers meets several times during the school year to discuss the needs and issues of the subject area that they are reviewing. They use a process called "curriculum mapping" to make sure that what they are teaching at each grade level is appropriate and in line with state and national standards. Teachers will use this "map" throughout the year to keep track of when they teach different skills.

ASSESSMENT

Students are tested using 2 different testing methods throughout their education at Mulvane. We use the NorthWest Evaluation Association (NWEA) online testing program at grades 2-11. Students take an online test in the fall and the spring in the areas of Language Usage, Reading, and Math. Their "RIT" score is reported to parents. The state of Kansas requires students take a battery of Kansas Assessments in the spring. In 2005-06, NCLB required each state to assess reading and math in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and once in high school. In 2006-07, the writing assessment will be added in for 5th, 8th, and once in high school. Writing will alternate every other year with history/government which will be added in beginning in 07-08 for grades 6, 8 and once in high school. Also in 07-08, science will be added for grades 4, 7, and high school. These tests are taken online. District results can be accessed through the Kansas State Department of Education website.
