Welcome to fifth grade!  I am excited to have your child in my class this year!

A Little History…

I grew up in the small town of Meade, Kansas and graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Elementary Education. This is my twentieth year teaching in Mulvane.  The first eleven years I spent teaching sixth grade at Mulvane Intermediate School and Mulvane Middle School.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns—fcottrell@usd263.org.

The Goal…

Fifth grade is a year dedicated to growing and maturing and learning.  My job is to make sure the kids I work with are prepared for middle school and beyond.  I hope the lessons they learn here will serve them into adulthood and in all the amazing things I know they’ll do!

The Plan…

English Language Arts (ELA) consists of Literature and Informational Text, Foundational Skills, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language.  We have lots to learn so we stay very busy!

Reading
Our textbook is Scott Foresman’s Reading Street. Our fifth grade curriculum includes:
Inferences
Theme
Story elements
Character
Setting
Conflict
Resolution
Climax
Compare and contrast
Main ideas and details
Story structures
Prefixes and suffixes
Greek and Latin root words
Figurative language
Similes
Metaphors
Hyperbole
Alliteration
Idioms
Onomatopoeia
Personification
Author’s purpose

Context clues

I encourage your child to spend some time reading daily, but this is not a requirement.  Newspapers, magazines, comic books and plain old books will work!

Spelling

Students generally get a spelling list every other Monday. All of my lists are available at www.spellingcity.com and I highly recommend this site! It provides teaching, practice tests and games. Spelling tests are taken on Fridays using the clickers. The clickers enable you to get immediate feedback.  Make sure to ask your child to show you his/her test results!

Social Studies

Our textbook is Building a Nation by Scott Foresman.

Social Studies is a great place to squeeze in more reading skill instruction!  We work on main ideas and details, cause and effect, fact and opinion, comparing and contrasting, summarizing, sequencing, and drawing conclusions.

Our curriculum also includes:

• time lines
• charts, graphs, tables and diagrams
• map and globe skills
• latitude and longitude
