Physical Education News Flash!
by Cathy Fooshee
We’re on the final lap and we’re sprinting to finish…we’re
finishing what we began! In the fall, students in 4th and 5th grade
took tests on several skill and fitness items in Physical
Education. In fourth grade, it was underhand Volleyball serve,
non-dominant bank shots and one minute sit-ups test. In fifth grade
it was left and right bank shots (30 seconds), overhead Volleyball
serve, one minute push-ups test, one minute sit-ups test and sit
and reach flexibility test. In addition to testing, fifth graders
filled out a goal sheet, setting goals for improvements in each of
the areas by this time of the school year. Well it’s time to see
how hard each student has worked! Bank shots, sit-ups and push-ups
tests were re-administered just before spring break. Volleyball
serves and flexibility tests will be completed shortly after spring
break. Fifth graders will see their goal sheets again – this time
with the results from both fall and spring – and soon after parents
should see them come home. The projected timeline for this is by
the end of April. Any parent wishing to see their child’s results –
or the results to date – may e-mail Cathy Fooshee at

Other news…
In third grade last fall, each student was observed performing
several fundamental skills. The list included: skipping, galloping,
jumping, hopping (left and right), throwing and catching. No grades
were given at that time, but areas needing improvement were noted
and addressed throughout the year for each student. Third graders
were recently observed in each of those areas again and this time
received letter grades on their performance. Those grades will be
included on the 4th quarter grade card by the end of March.
More news yet…
Congratulations are due to fourth and fifth graders for a
successful Hoops for Heart campaign. Though our $5,400 was short of
our stated goal, the American Heart Association still welcomes this
generous donation from our community. Funds will be used for
research in their efforts to fight heart disease. The fourth
graders were excited when Donna Augustine-Shaw came to shoot a few
hoops with them. (see picture)
Last but not least…
The 2008 Summer Olympics will be hosted this year in Beijing China
from August 8 - 24th. Students wanting to learn about
the Olympics can log on to: en.beijing2008.cn/ - 36k.
Students held their own Olympics in February as a part of our
school wide “World Communities” project. All students had fun as
they participated in adaptations of selected Olympic sports. Bronze
medals went to Denmark (Sparks), China (Canfield) and Canada
(Clausen). Silver medals went to Morocco (Beck), South Africa
(Elliott) and Italy (Langover). Gold medals went to India
(Wehrheim), Mexico (Cline) and France (Entwisle). As the saying
goes…”a fun time was had by all!”
